What are FAANG Stocks?

Four well-known American technology companies are included in the "FANG" group: Meta (META) (formerly Facebook), Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX), and Alphabet (GOOG). In 2017, the company Apple (AAPL) was added, so the acronym was changed to "FAANG". FAANG stocks have seen impressive growth in recent years, with each member more than doubling in value over the past five years. The Nasdaq technology exchange trades each of these stocks. Approximately 15% of the S&P 500 consists of FAANG stocks, and as of early March 2021, the companies had a combined market capitalization of almost $6 trillion. Individual investors, who prefer to invest in individual shares are very interested in these shares.

Meta (formerly Facebook)

Facebook is a social networking platform. In addition to Facebook, Meta is also the parent company of other popular social media services, such as Whatsapp and Instagram. As of Q1 2021, Statista estimates that the company has more than 2.8 billion users. This represents about 30% of the world's population. Meta is primarily funded by advertising. The company generated revenue of 85.97 billion US dollars and profit of 29.15 billion US dollars in the 2020 financial year.

Amazon

Amazon is a business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce platform that makes use of advanced cloud computing and data analytics technologies to sell retail products. Over 150 million people currently subscribe to Amazon Prime (Amazon's membership program that provides benefits such as faster and free delivery). In 2020, the company sold products to more than 300 million active customers in the United States alone. In 2020, Amazon had annual sales of $586 billion and net income of $29 billion.

Apple

Apple is engaged in a wide range of businesses, including computers, operating systems, mobile communications, and consumer electronics. During the period between 2004 and 2020, Apple's revenue grew from approximately $8 billion to approximately $274.5 billion, with the iPhone generating most of the revenue. Furthermore, Apple is developing new products in the field of streaming and cloud computing, such as Apple Arcade and Apple Music.

Netflix

Netflix is an online entertainment streaming service that specializes in movies and TV shows. Netflix produces its own content in order to differentiate itself from its competitors. Subscriptions to the company have steadily increased in recent years. Netflix has also been recognized as a Corona winner. In 2020, Netflix generated total revenue of $25 billion. For the first time, the number of subscribers exceeded 200 million at the end of 2020.

Alphabet

Alphabet is Google's parent company. Alphabet is a leading technology conglomerate with a wide range of products. A total of nine companies (e.g. Android, Chrome, Maps, Search, Youtube, Gmail) are owned by Alphabet and each has a user base of one billion. Currently, Google receives more than 60,000 search queries per second, and the Android mobile operating system is estimated to account for 75% of the global smartphone market. In Q4 2019, its market capitalization exceeded $1 trillion for the first time. The company generated revenues of USD 182 billion in 2020.
